Introduction to ISSF
What does the acronym ISSF stand for?
International Shooting Sport Federation.
This is the name of the international body who control specific types of handgun matches - worldwide.
ISSF is one of the largest and oldest firearm shooting bodies in the world.
The shooting disciplines (types of matches) that fall under the ISSF banner are;
25 and 50 metre Olympic handgun matches
Rapid Fire Standard Gun
Sports Pistol Air Pistol
Centre Fire 50m Pistol
ISSF also covers 25 & 50 meter Black Powder Matches (discussed in another article).
ISSF matches have been shot in Australia since approx 1948.
Many clubs in Australia are affiliated to the ISSF through a state organisation and Pistol Australia.
In South Australia the State Association is SARPA (South Australian Revolver & Pistol Association Inc)
Support;
For the above mentioned firearm disciplines shot at the Olympics, there is much support from the Australian Govt for competition in this area.
Top achievers from each state regularly compete in the Commonwealth Games and of course other high profile international firearm matches.
The Match;
All the matches are of a fixed time. ISSF matches are focused on precision timed firing.
The Range;
Most clubs have 25 metre ranges with turning targets that turn to face the competitor at the start and turn away from the competitor at the finish
Firing;
Is done from the standing position and with only one hand holding the firearm.
Firearm:
.22 calibre semi automatic handguns are used for most matches.
.32 calibre or larger centre fire revolvers and pistols are used for the Centre Fire match.
.177 calibre air pistols are used for the air pistol match.
Scoring;
Scoring is out of a maximum of 600 points for most of the matches. An average club level competitor would on average score approx 490 points.
Targets;
3 Targets types are used in ISSF matches;
25/50 metre Precision target 25/50 metre Rapid Fire target 10 metre Air Pistol target.
